President's Message

J. Michael Bacharach, MD, MPH, FACC
President, Society for Vascular Medicine

It is with great pleasure, as the newly installed President of the Society for Vascular Medicine, that I have the opportunity to provide this month's message for the SVM newsletter.

As we look back at this past year, it is important to recognize the trials and tribulations that we have faced, but it is most important to address the accomplishments and successes that the Society has enjoyed.

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate our outgoing president, Dr. John Cooke, for an outstanding job during his two-year tenure as president. John's accomplishments are too many to enumerate here, however it would suffice to say that he worked tirelessly on behalf of the Society during a rather difficult period, and I believe that the foundation structures that he has helped to establish will serve us well in the future. I look forward to continuing to work with John as he serves as past president over the next two years.

2007 SVM Annual Meeting
For those of you who attended our 2007 annual meeting, you are well aware that it was one of the best annual meetings that we have had. For those of you who were not able to attend, we hope that it sets the standard for the future, and that you will be able to attend this next year.

The specific highlights from the SVM Scientific Sessions include the clinical updates on both pharmacologic therapies for PAD as well as endovascular therapies. One of the areas that have not been routinely discussed was in relation to vascular medicine economics. Drs. Rooke, Kaufman and Criado all did an excellent job in presenting a very complex and difficult area that is not routinely presented.

Clearly one of the major highlights was the keynote speaker address by Dr. Harry Dietz from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Dietz kept the audience spellbound with his discussion of Marfan's syndrome and translational therapies that have had a significant impact on its clinical management. This clearly represents exceptional work and it was one of the most outstanding lectures that I have heard in quite some time.

The gala event was also a huge success and provided an opportunity of celebration and collegial interchange which everyone seemed to enjoy.

Overall the meeting logistics were outstanding with significant contributions by the Sherwood Group and the TenDot Group.

We all should look forward to the 2008 Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions in Minneapolis. It is my sincere hope that I will see all of you there next year.

As we look to the future for this upcoming year, I am excited about opportunities we have as a Society to grow and to maintain significant voice for our members in the area of vascular care. We again find ourselves, however, in a transition period. The move to Sherwood Group has been exciting. I believe that with their administrative expertise and infrastructure, SVM will flourish.

The challenge for all of us is to attempt to make the Society better, and I would encourage all of you to provide input and feedback to the Board of Directors and the officers, so that we can continue to reflect the needs and desires of our membership.

2008 SVM Dues Renewal Notices have been mailed. Please help SVM minimize administrative costs and continue to grow by renewing your dues online or via fax or mail as soon as possible. Log in to the members only section at www.vascularmed.org to renew your membership today.

Abstract Submission Opens for 2008 SVM Annual Meeting

19th Scientific Sessions and 4th Board Review Course
May 29 - June 1
Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
Minneapolis, Minn.

SVM is planning its first stand-alone annual meeting, May 29-June 1, in Minneapolis. Previous meetings were held in conjunction with Society for Vascular Surgery meetings. After careful consideration, the SVM Board of Trustees voted to hold the 2008 annual meeting independently, citing cost containment, content control and the need to improve the meeting experience for the growing SVM membership.

The 2008 SVM Annual Meeting includes Scientific Sessions and the Board Review Course, creating the premier multidisciplinary educational event in vascular medicine. The Annual Meeting exposes the vascular practitioner to the discoveries, trends and technologies shaping the field. Topics include the latest advances in pharmacotherapy for preventing adverse vascular events; trends in vascular and molecular imaging; endovascular intervention and devices; pathobiology of vascular diseases; as well as management of the associated medical disorders of metabolism and coagulation.

The format includes lectures with panel discussions, Hot Topics, poster sessions, a junior investigator competition, and audience participation events such as the popular Vascular Jeopardy and Cases over Cocktails.

The Society for Vascular Medicine invites investigators to submit abstracts to be considered for poster presentation at the 19th Annual Scientific Sessions in Minneapolis, MN. Abstracts should describe clinical research in vascular medicine or basic research in vascular biology. Abstract submission is online via the SVM Web site.

SVM Becomes SVMB

The Society for Vascular Medicine and Biology fellows approved a new name for the organization at the SVMB Annual Business Meeting in June: Society for Vascular Medicine. The new name becomes official on Jan. 1, 2008, but "SVM" is being introduced in the Society's publications and on the SVM Web site as a transitional period. The Society has been known as SVMB since its formation in 1989.

"Dropping 'Biology' from its name is by no means a retreat from the research mission of the Society," said SVM Past President John Cooke, M.D. "This change recognizes that vascular medicine includes all aspects of research, including clinical, translational as well as basic vascular biology. Biologists will always be key SVM members."

SVM Unveils New Web Site and URL: vascularmed.org

SVM unveiled its newly designed Web site and new name on October 1. The site features a new design, improved navigation and enriched resources for vascular medicine professionals. Dr. David Slovut chairs the SVM Web site committee and serves as chief editor for the site.

Among the site's new regular features are the Interactive Case Study and the Vascular Medicine Image. Both present a vascular medicine case using text or images, and then invite the reader to answer questions. The Case Study and Image will alternate, with a new one appearing each month. The inaugural feature is an image from the journal, Vascular Medicine. The site also features a robust job bank, slides from the annual meeting, and more. www.vascularmed.org

SVM Awards & Recognition

Master of the Society for Vascular Medicine
The honorary Master of the Society for Vascular Medicine (MSVM) designation was approved by the SVM Board of Trustees earlier this year, and the first MSVM designees were announced at the Annual Meeting in June.

"The vigor of the Society depends upon the selfless dedication and enlightened leadership of individuals devoted to its mission," said Dr. John Cooke. "These individuals serve tirelessly and without compensation. Such service should be recognized. Accordingly, as of this year, the honorary title of "Master of the Society for Vascular Medicine" (MSVM) will be conferred upon individuals who have provided extraordinary service to the Society. Such an individual will have been a fellow of the Society for more than 15 years. No more than three Master designations will be awarded each year by the Society." Dr. Cooke then invited each of the new Masters to join him on the podium, and provided a brief description of their activities on behalf of SVM and the field:

Michael R. Jaff, MD
Dr. Michael R. Jaff is our outgoing past president. He is assistant professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School and the director, Vascular Medicine and the Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. There, he directs the Vascular Ultrasound Core Laboratory, one of the largest clinical research vascular ultrasound laboratories globally.

Dr. Jaff has a seemingly endless reserve of energy, and has actively served a number of vascular entities: he is director for the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories; board member of the Vascular Disease Foundation; member of the Exam Development Task Force for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers; editorial board member of several journals including Circulation, Vascular Medicine, the Journal of Vascular Surgery, Annals of Internal Medicine and others.

Dr. Jaff's presidency was a time of great progress for the Society. He has spearheaded fundraising and investment activities for the Society, and the financial health of the Society is in large measure due to his work. Most notably, under his leadership, the American Board of Vascular Medicine was constituted. The ABVM has been an unqualified success, thanks to the diligent efforts of Drs. Jaff and Bruce Gray. Our society is fortunate to have his continued attention and service.

Mark A. Creager, MD
Dr. Mark A. Creager is professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Vascular Center at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. It is there that Dr. Creager has an internationally recognized clinical research group in vascular regulatory mechanisms. He has made many important contributions to our understanding of human endothelial vasodilator function in health and disease, with more than 200 published contributions to the medical literature.

Dr. Creager has been the recipient of many awards and honors, and is currently the Simon C. Fireman Scholar in Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is an editor of the textbook, Vascular Medicine and Current Treatment Options in Cardiovascular Medicine, and a member of the editorial boards of Circulation and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

Dr. Creager is one of the wise men of this society. He was one of the original founders and is a reservoir of history and tradition. Much of that history and tradition has been contributed by Dr. Creager in his many roles as president of the Society, editor of the Society journal, co-founder of the American Board of Vascular Medicine, and extraordinarily effective representative at the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

Alan T. Hirsch, MD
Dr. Alan T. Hirsch is a founding member and past president of the SVM, and currently chair of the Committee on Intersocietal Relations. In this role, he has been exceedingly active, most notably in his organization of the Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) Coalition. He is professor of epidemiology and community health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Medical School, as well as director of Abbott Northwestern Hospital's Vascular Center in Minneapolis.

The research work of Dr. Hirsch has been focused on community-based peripheral arterial disease detection and treatment. Notable studies initiated by Dr. Hirsch include the PARTNERS database and REACH Registry. Currently he chairs the NHLBI-sponsored CLEVER trial to evaluate exercise vs. endovascular vs. optimal medical therapies for individuals with P.A.D.

Dr. Hirsch has been a spectacular advocate for our field, and for our patients. As just one example, he was the lead author on the "ACC-AHA Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease". Most notably, he conceived of and organized and successfully raised funds for the "Peripheral Arterial Disease Coalition," which he now chairs. The P.A.D. Coalition includes 37 organizations including the founding member SVM. Dr. Hirsch is a compelling speaker, and has an exceedingly enthusiastic and persuasive manner, as evidenced in part by his success in garnering a commitment of $3 million by the NHLBI toward a national campaign to increase awareness of P.A.D. This national collaboration represents an unprecedented opportunity to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of millions of Americans with P.A.D.

Jay D. Coffman Young Investigator Awards
In honor of Jay D. Coffman (1928-2006), distinguished internist and researcher of vascular medicine and clinical cardiology, SVM sponsors an annual award in vascular medicine and biology. Forty-four posters were accepted for display and six award finalists gave oral presentations at SVM's 18th Annual Scientific Sessions June 7 in Baltimore.

First place was awarded to Surovi Hazarika, MD, PhD, of Duke University Medical Center for presenting the study "Impaired angiogenesis following hind-limb ischemia in myoglobin transgenic mice." The results of this study show that myoglobin in the skeletal muscle can sequester nitric oxide, thereby reducing its bio-availability. Thus myoglobin expression can modulate ischemia-induced angiogenic response in an endothelium independent manner.

Clarence Findley, AB, from Duke University garnered the second place award with his presentation showing that VEGF directly induces Tie2 cleavage in PI3K-Akt dependent manner.

Third place went to Zongjin Li, MD, PhD, of Stanford University for "Endothelial progenitor cells from murine embryonic stem cells: isolation and transplantation for myocardial infarction."

Other finalists included Ayotunde O. Dokun, MD, PhD, Duke University Medical Center, Maria Pitsiouni, PhD, Stanford University, and Andrew Wilson, MD, PhD, Stanford University School of Medicine.
